Children's
Chairs
Often as adults, we forget that children are
different; and I do not mean different just in the way that they are small. They are small and their physical
requirements are for small kids’ furniture. If you give them furniture that is their size, like this
chair and ottoman or
recliner, they will build a
feeling of belonging and of confidence about themselves. It creates a sense of rightness that only comes from
a growing self confidence that is bolstered by having their sized stuff. Toddler chairs will help start that
process from an early age. Quite a few years ago, there was a Barbara Streisand TV special “My Name Is
Barbara”, where she was sitting in a huge rocking chair, saying that she was three and a half years old? Why was it
believable? Because she was dressed like a little girl, and the chair was so over-sized that she actually looked
small. But children don’t like to be made to feel small. They want to be big.
Not only are some toddler size chairs cute, but there are many
furniture manufactures that make quality toddler sized furniture. When my girls were small, we had a rocking
chair that was the shape of a bear, covered with a fur-like material. The kids all loved it, sometimes
too much. When friends would visit with their children, sometimes the chair had to be put away since there was
only one chair but multiple children.
Toddler chairs need to be sturdy and solid, but the little one should be able to
position the chair where he or she wants it. Table and chairs are a great set of children’s furniture for a
toddler. Being able to sit at a table that is just the correct size, gives the young one a sense of completeness,
of being right. Children love to mimic adults when they are little, so let them start with toddler chairs that they
will love, and you will appreciate the memories that are built, perhaps around a silly bear chair.
